“Insomnia” opened on June 9th, 1970 at the Birdland Jazz Club in Hell’s Kitchen. Spumoni’s new and experimental musical performed from two to five AM after club hours and featured a Sarah Vaughan-esk jazz singer who sat up in bed and sang one, three hour song.
Clive Barnes of the The New York Times said, “A promising new contender has arrived in the crowded sleep aid aisle. Joining the ranks of Sominex, Mornidine and Flurazepam is DeCarlo’s “Insomnia” Broadway’s new sleeping pill, that will not only put you to sleep, but make you want to overdose on a handful of sleeping pills.”
After four tired performances, the show peacefully passed away in its sleep on June 12th and is today considered the ultimate DeCarlo cult classic for woke people.
